Advanced Placement (AP)

What is AP?

Similar to IB, AP course enrollment and exams provide students the opportunity to take college-level courses while enrolled in the high school. Unlike IB, which for most of the BCC courses requires a two year enrollment with internally moderated projects and papers along the way, AP is a one year course with an external examination at the end of the year. AP courses at BCC include: AP Literature, AP Language and Composition, AP US History, AP Chemistry, AP Computer Science, AP Environmental Science, AP Statistics, and AP Calculus.

Why do AP?

In these courses, students will develop the writing skills, problem-solving techniques, and study habits that will prepare them for college. Taking AP courses demonstrates a student’s maturity and the willingness to push him/herself intellectually. By taking o the challenges of AP courses, a student commits to academic excellence that can assist in the college application process. Most colleges in the US and Canada grant students earning passing scores of 3-5 credit, placement, or both for qualifying AP exam grades.
