Mission and Philosophy of the Speech & Debate Team

The Baltimore City College Speech and Debate Team exists to promote citizenship, teamwork, critical though, and communication skills.  Although those skills are taught in the classroom, experience demonstrates that providing students with opportunities for co-curricular competition is an excellent source of motivation.  The mission of the coaching staff includes finding tournament opportunities which will both challenge students as well as provide a reasonable opportunity for success.  To this end, a wide variety of invitational and league tournaments are scheduled, although no student will attend all tournaments.

Baltimore City College competes in the Baltimore Catholic Forensic League (BCFL), the Baltimore Urban Debate League (BUDL), and the Chesapeake District of the National Forensic League (NFL).  You will note that our tentative schedule will include many invitational tournaments which will be held at colleges and high schools out of state.  The standards should have at least one opportunity to travel per year.  Travel opportunities provide many benefits; first, attending travel tournaments provides students with the opportunity to explore the campuses of several prestigious colleges and universities.  Second, students will experience what it is like to be away from home in a safe and structured environment.  Third, the opportunity to travel serves as additional motivation and provides a shared experience which is essential to building a cohesive team.

Each of the opportunities for competition, be it debate, speech, student congress, or mock trial, promotes different skills.  To that extent, your student will be encouraged to develop expertise in multiple events.  Moreover, we believe that students are students first.  Therefore, students are required to meet the academic and attendance eligibility requirements of all co-curricular activities at City.

Requirements and Expectations

Participation as a member of the Speech and Debate Team is relatively easy.  Students are expected to attend a general monthly meeting of the team.  In addition, there will be at least two weekly practices that all students should attend for their particular event.  We arrange the practice schedule to accommodate the greatest number of students in each event.  We are also willing to schedule additional sessions as needed for those students with athletic, musical, work, community or family conflicts.  The practice schedule for the 2008-2009 Speech and Debate season will be as follows:

  • Novice Policy Debate:Monday and Wednesday (Steck 235)
  • All Levels Policy Debate:  Tuesday,  and Thursday (Daniels 153-1)
  • Lincoln Douglas/Extemp/Congress/Mock Trial:  Tuesday (Steck)
  • Advanced Policy: Wednesday (Daniels)
  • Speech/ Extemp Events:  Tuesday and Wednesday  (Rosenberg 301)
  • Duo and DI Competitors are also required to attend drama rehearsal on Thursday afternoons with Mr. McBee and Mr. Rosenberg
  • Mock Trial: We have two teams that compete in the regional CLREP league. Practice will begin in early October with our attorney coaches with competitions in January through March.
  • Ethics Bowl: We participate in the University of Baltimore sponsored high school Ethics Bowl every May.

All students who meet membership requirements through competition will become members of the National Forensic League, a national honorary society recognizing excellence in high school speech and debate.  The National Forensic League is highly recognized by the majority of college and university admissions offices.  Those students who consistently make the effort to attend as many competitions and practices as possible, quickly excel in their chosen event.  Those who do excel have an excellent opportunity to represent themselves, City College, Baltimore, and the State of Maryland at the NCFL and/or NFL National Tournament.  City students have qualified to the National Tournament in each of the past twelve years!

The majority of our tournaments are held on Saturdays throughout the year in the Baltimore area.  Usually, students will travel by a chartered bus, which will leave Baltimore City College between 7:00 – 7:30 in the morning and will return about 5:00 in the afternoon.  Student Congress competitions are held on weekdays and we will usually leave school at 2:30 and should return around 6:00 in the afternoon.

Students who sign-up to attend a tournament, are expected to be at school in time for departure of the bus.  For students to get on the bus, we must have a signed copy of the Parental Permission Form (enclosed) in my possession.  This form will cover all Saturday and weekend tournaments where students will not miss any classroom time.  You may, of course, withdraw your permission by notifying the director at any time.

Students representing Baltimore City College are expected to abide by the separately enclosed Guidelines for Participation.  Please review this form with your student, and indicate your agreement by signing it, and having your student return it to the Director of Speech & Debate.

Additionally, accidents and emergencies, although rare, have been known to occur at speech and debate events.  To ensure that the health and welfare of our students is protected, please complete and return the enclosed emergency form.  Students will not be allowed to attend tournaments unless we have a completed copy of the form.

How You Can Help

While we endeavor to provide instruction and materials for students to participate at minimal cost, Baltimore City College cannot have a large successful team without the support of our family and friends.  We need parents and friends of the team to help get students to City in time for the bus to depart on Saturdays, to help ensure that students meet the attendance eligibility requirements, and to judge at speech and debate tournaments.  Additionally, you are encouraged to listen to your students as they practice and come to a tournament to witness some of the incredible things our students are doing.  Please let us know if you are willing to judge or want to observe at a tournament so that we may save you a space on the bus!

We especially need parent volunteers to help support us in any way that they can.  Running this team is an expensive proposition and we are always in need of additional fundraisers.  We will also need help covering our judging slots at the tournaments (no experience is necessary) so please do not hesitate to contact Mr. Daniels to become involved at this level.

I am very excited that your student wants to be a part of the Speech and Debate Team at Baltimore City College.  This year we have a group of extremely bright and talented students.  We look forward to providing these students with guidance, training, and the opportunity for high team and individual success.  Please do not hesitate to contact me at patrick.daniels@gmail.com if you have any questions or concerns.  Additionally, you can reach Coach Daniels on his cell phone (especially on tournament days) at 401-559-4094 or 410-929-4305.
